Better Homes Wakefield

We are committed to helping our residents heat their homes for less by installing energy saving home improvements.

There are many energy efficiency improvements that can be carried out to make your home warmer, healthier and cheaper to heat, these include:

Better Homes Wakefield is part of Better Homes Yorkshire and is open to homeowners, private tenants and landlords in the Leeds City Region. Participating councils include: Leeds, Bradford, Kirklees, Calderdale, Barnsley, Wakefield, York, Craven, Harrogate and Selby.

Working in partnership with council approved delivery partners ENGIE** (formerly Keepmoat Regeneration).

Engie is the only Council approved companies to carry out energy efficiency measures in your home and community.

** As of January 2018, Keepmoat Regeneration has re-branded as ENGIE, all projects being delivered through Better Homes Yorkshire from January 2018 onwards will be carried out by ENGIE.

Wakefield Energy Savers Loan

Funded by Wakefield Council and available through Leeds City Credit Union, the Energy Savers Loan is an interest free loan that you can use to help pay for insulation, heating and microgeneration work in your home.

Loans are available up to a maximum of £7,000 over a repayment period of 5 years.
You can select your own reputable installer to do the work, however the Council may be able to help you find someone if required.

To apply you must be an owner-occupier and meet ONE of the following criteria:

  1. Be aged 60 or over

  2. Be in receipt of an income related benefit (excluding Child Tax Credit)

  3. Be in receipt of Working Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit and have a net household income of less than £16,010

If you do not meet ONE of the three criteria listed above you may also qualify by undergoing a simple application assessment by our Loans Officer.

Wakefield Energy Repayment Loan

The Energy Repayment Loan can be used to carry out home energy efficiency works to reduce fuel poverty and improve affordable warmth and can include measures such as insulation, replacement boilers and better heating controls. It is a monthly repayable interest free loan registered as a Legal Charge. Loans are available are between £300 and £3,000 and the maximum repayment is 5 years. There is a small set up cost and this is confirmed at the application stage.

You can select your own reputable installer to do the work, however the Council may be able to help you find someone if required.

To apply you must be an owner-occupier aged over 18 and meet the following criteria both a and b:

a. Be in receipt of a means tested or disability benefit or have a gross household income of less than £21,000 and

b.

  • Live in a property that is Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rated E, F and G, or
  • Live in a property that is EPC rated D and have one characteristic of fuel poverty*, or
  • Live in a property that is EPC rated D and have health condition made worse by the cold#

*Characteristics of fuel poverty are:

  • There is a child under the age of 16 resident in the household
  • There is a resident aged over 70 in the household
  • The property has solid walls, non-standard cavity walls, system build wall, is off the gas network, or has no loft

#Health conditions made worse by the cold include but are not limited to chronic respiratory, cardio vascular, musculoskeletal illness, or mental health conditions

BeWarm Insulation

BeWarm free cavity wall insulation

BeWarm Insulation provides grants to help cover the cost of installing loft and cavity wall insulation.

Some households may qualify for free insulation regardless of their circumstances.

BeWarm is part of the Council's drive to help residents save energy and money, and reduce fuel poverty.

The insulation work is delivered by the Council's approved Better Homes Yorkshire insulation partner, A&M Energy Solutions.

Currently A&M Energy Solutions are out in the district promoting BeWarm on the doorstep. If your area is targeted you will receive a Council letter beforehand.

BeWarm Insulation is the only Council endorsed loft and cavity wall insulation scheme currently operating in the Wakefield district.

Approval is subject to a survey and terms and conditions apply.

Warm Homes Fund

The Warm Homes Fund provides gas central heating to help residents save energy and be warm in their homes. It provides full gas central heating systems with an A rated combi boilers fitted completely free* of charge to tenants and owner occupiers**, as long as the criteria is met.
All of the work is done by the Council’s approved contractors through the Better Homes Yorkshire scheme.

If there is no gas supply the Warm Homes Fund can also arrange gas connections free of charge as long as the property is close to the gas main.*

You may qualify for the Warm Homes Fund if you live in the Wakefield district and meet the following criteria:

  • Own your home or rent from a private landlord**
  • Struggle to pay your heating bill
  • Currently use one of the following as your main heating system
    • gas fires
    • electric storage heaters
    • coal fires
  • Have unheated rooms in your home

* Subject to eligibility criteria and proximity to gas main
