The question voters were asked was:

How would you like Wakefield Council to be run?

The options and the votes for each were:

By a leader who is an elected councillor chosen by other elected councillors. This is how the Council is run now45,357   (62.2%)
By a mayor who is elected by voters. This would be a change from how the Council is run now27,610   (37.8%)

As the majority of votes cast in this referendum were in favour of the Council being run by a Leader who is an elected councillor chosen by the other elected councillors, then the Council was required to continue to operate a Leader and Cabinet Executive.​
