Important update about Marriage Preliminaries
As you are aware, the Immigration Act includes important new provisions to tackle sham marriages and civil partnerships. The notice period for all marriages and civil partnerships is being extended to 28 days.
The changes will remove the banns and common licence process for non EEA nationals, who will be required to complete civil preliminaries before marrying in the Anglican Church.
Subject to Parliamentary approval of the secondary legislation, a new referral and investigation scheme will be introduced across the UK to identify and investigate suspected sham marriages and civil partnerships and to take effective enforcement or casework action to prevent individuals from gaining immigration advantage.
The new scheme and changes required to marriage and civil partnership preliminaries will be implemented on Monday 2 March 2015.
You may wish to alert any couples who are planning to arrange marriage preliminaries/notices after this date to these changes.
