Cremation

Crematoria

We have two crematoriums located in Pontefract and Wakefield that perform over 3,000 cremations each year. As a member of The Federation of British Cremation Authority, we follow the Federation's code of cremation practice and Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management.

Despite the government relaxing some lockdown restrictions there are still continuing restrictions with regard to Cremation Services.  We expect these constraints to be in place for public gatherings such as funerals for an extended period of time, which could be several months.

Cremations continue to take place but there is some new guidance to help keep people safe. The changes for each of the crematoriums are detailed below. We will be monitoring guidelines and will update the information as required.

Pontefract Crematorium – Guidance as of 7th August 2020

We are now offering a either a 20 or 35 minute service in our crematorium chapel.

Currently a maximum of 14 people can sit inside and attend the funeral service at Pontefract chapel. This does not include the minister conducting the service.

Friday 09.00 -14.30 (last service is 20 minutes)

Wakefield Crematorium

Standbridge Lane, Wakefield, WF4 3JA

We are now offering a either a 20 or 35 minute service in our crematorium chapel.

Currently a maximum of 16 people can sit inside and attend the funeral service at Wakefield chapel. This does not include the minister conducting the service.

The service times for Wakefield Crematorium are as follows:

(Please note the service length will be 20 minutes or 35 minutes with 10 minutes required for cleaning after each service)

Monday – Thursday 09.00 – 15.00

Friday 09.00 -14.00 (last service is 20 minutes)

The following procedures are now in place in both of the crematorium:

  • It is now a requirement that all mourners who attend a Cremation service wear a face covering.
  • The Chapels are now cleaned and sanitised in-between services.
  • The Chapel is adapted so people can observe the 2 metre rule when seated.  To protect the health & wellbeing of all individuals in the Chapel we respectfully ask that you do not move the furniture and that social distancing be maintained at all times.
  • The use of hymn books and service sheets is suspended, along with family collections
  • Hand sanitiser is provided at the entrance and exit.  Toilets and hand washing facilities are available at each Crematorium.
  • The catafalque, where the coffin is placed once inside the Chapel, will be roped off when it is in place.  We would request that mourners do not touch or kiss the coffin after the service.
  • Mourners are discouraged from congregating outside the Chapel, either during the service or afterwards to offer condolences to the family.  Please be aware that the external speakers will not be turned on and the service will not be broadcast outside of the Chapel.

Strewing of cremated remains with an appointment

Strewing appointments have now been resumed. If you wish to book an appointment please contact the Bereavement Services office on 01924 307446 or bereavmentservices@wakefield.gov.uk.

More details will be discussed when the appointment is made.

A maximum of 20 mourners are allowed to attend and people are requested to maintain the two metre social distancing requirements.

Book of Remembrance Rooms

Currently the Book of Remembrance rooms are closed at both Wakefield and Pontefract Crematoria.  We are closely monitoring guidelines and will make changes as required.

It is still possible to purchase an entry for the book of Remembrance by contacting bereavmentservices@wakefield.gov.uk.

Track and Trace

In line with the government guidance the attendees at either Crematoria will need to follow Track and Trace procedures. In order not to make this as an intrusive process, we will be asking the applicant for the funeral service to keep a note of the names and contact details of the mourners attending in the chapel. This information should be gathered prior to the funeral service. Should there be a last minute change to the attendees the names of those mourners must be added to the list and kept by the applicant.

Should anyone attending at the service test positive for Covid 19 an official from the Track and Trace programme will contact them for details of their contacts including attendee at the funeral service.

The applicant will need to keep the record of the persons who attended the funeral for 21 days.
