In 2013 we signed a 25-year contract with Shanks Waste Management that is
revolutionising the way that waste is managed in the district.
The contract comes after we successfully
secured government support through the waste Private Finance Initiative (PFI)
including a grant for £33 million from DEFRA.
This means that we are able to fulfil the
requirements of our approved Municipal Waste Management Strategy, save money,
increase recycling across the district and reduce the amount of waste sent to
From 25 February 2013, Shanks
began operating waste management services previously provided by the Council.
Since then we have built new state of the art facilities, closed some of the
older sites and created a number of improvements to the Household
Waste Recycling Centres such as increased opening hours to offer a seven
day-a-week service, increased staffing levels and new signage has been
installed at the facilities.
The new waste treatment facilities in South
Kirkby are already beginning to increase recycling, reduce the amount of waste
we send to landfill, help generate green sustainable energy, and have created
jobs for local people. This is the key development for the project and will
help us to recycle more than 52 per cent of the household waste produced in the
