Gambling policy

​The Gambling Act 2005 requires us to regulate and administer gambling across the district and as part of this we are obliged to publish a statement of the principles we propose to apply in exercising our functions under the Act.

The Act sets out three licensing objectives:

  • Preventing gambling from being a source of crime and disorder, being associated with crime and disorder or being used to support crime
  • Ensure that gambling is conducted in a fair and open way
  • Protecting children and other vulnerable persons from being harmed or exploited in gambling

The existing statement of principles has been amended to reflect  the 5th edition guidance for Local Authorities issued by the Gambling Commission which includes reference to the obligation for applicants to include within applications for grants and variations for premises licences, a local risk assessment.

We have prepared a draft statement of principles for the period 2017-2018 and would welcome your opinion as to its content as part of our public consultation.
