Environmental information regulations

The EIR 2004 law allows people to access environmental information held by public authorities. It replaced the 1992 Environmental Information Regulations and is one of three UK laws related to information access, along with FOIA 2000 and DPA 2018.

Guidance on Handling Requests

To request information under EIR, email freedomofinformation@wakefield.gov.uk

Requests can also be made in writing, or verbally to any Council staff. For verbal requests the Corporate Information Governance Team will confirm in writing to ensure understanding of the specific data being asked for.

Get more information about how to make a request.

The Environmental Information Regulations 2004 and the Freedom of Information Act 2000 promote openness and accountability among public authorities. They give people the right to access information held by public authorities, creating a better understanding of how they work.

Anyone can request environmental information, whether they are from home or abroad, including:

  • journalists
  • lobby groups
  • political parties
  • commercial organisations,
  • the public
