Bikeability and safer cycling
Bikeability is cycling proficiency for the 21st century delivered by Road Safety Instructors who have been trained to National Cycling Standards.
The aim of our 'On-Road Cycle Training Scheme' is to help the young road user to cycle safely in traffic. Training for the scheme is entirely practical and mostly on the road. It is aimed primarily at pupils in years 5 and 6.
In year 4 we introduce children to the basics of cycling. The training is off the road and covers a bicycle maintenance check followed by balancing skills and bicycle control.
On the day itself, we check that children can control their cycles. When the instructors are happy with the cyclist's abilities, 'on road' training will begin, using fairly quiet roads to practise junction work.
At the end of the course we take all the children on a short bicycle ride, putting into practice all the manoeuvres they have been taught.
If you would like to know more about this course please see the Contact Us - Road Safety Team for details of how to get in touch.

Bikeability will hopefully mean more children cycling, more safely and more often. This will contribute to a range of outcomes that the Council is promoting:-
- reduction in pollution and congestion
- Every Child Matters
- School Travel Planning
- the work of the School Sport Partnerships
- Road Safety Strategies
- Healthy Schools
