There are currently 285 grit bins throughout the Wakefield District in areas not normally included in Priority Routes, at hilly, tortuous or exposed locations. They are normally placed on site in November and taken back in to store in April after the winter. They are restocked with salt when needed.
The salt they hold is to be used on the highway and is not intended for private drives, paths etc.
Requests for additional grit bins will be considered but are only provided if full justification can be shown within the resources available.
Often grit bins become the focus of vandalism or the meeting place for youths. If this becomes an unbearable nuisance, a request for the bin to be removed can be made. The agreement of the other residents in the area would be needed before the facility is withdrawn or relocated to elsewhere in the vicinity.
If you want to request a new bin or would like a grit bin to be removed or relocated you can use the online Winter Gritting Form (see 'Related Links') or telephone the Wakefield Council Contact Centre (see 'Contact Us - Winter Service').
