updated: 8 March 2012
The North Wakefield Gateway (NWG) highway scheme provides a further section of the city’s strategic highway network, ‘The Emerald Ring’, which will eventually see the completion of a green boulevard around the city centre.
The works will fundamentally alter the highway network in the northern part of the city centre, introducing bus priority measures, upgraded junctions, new pedestrian crossings and will provide high quality public realm works around County Hall.
The County Hall area includes the top end of Wood Street, Coronation Gardens, Castrop Rauxel Square and the cleared area between County Hall and Bell Street. These areas lie within a conservation area and are surrounded by a number of important listed buildings. The materials used will be in keeping with this and consist of mainly traditional sandstone and granite.
