Permission is required from the council if you need to drop the kerb outside your property to make a driveway or hardstanding. Although Wakefield Council does not provide the construction service, consent is still required before you arrange any work. If consent is granted, you may then employ a suitably qualified contractor to carry out the works.
- A £45 charge is made for the administration of your application.
If the property is rented, either from a private landlord or housing association (such as Wakefield District Housing), you may require the permission of your landlord to take a vehicle into the garden.
Planning consent is required if the road on to which you wish to take access is classified (A, B, or C road). In addition, if the driveway or hardstanding is more than five square metres in area, planning consent is also required for this.
Planning Guidance Notes - forming a new access onto a road
Please read the Planning Guidance Notes (see 'Downloads') for advice and guidance on the design and construction of a vehicle access crossing.
The Notes and the frequently asked questions (see below) should answer most of your questions. However, if you have any further questions please contact us.
Making a request for a new access
If you wish to request a vehicle access crossing (kerb lowering for driveways) you can either telephone us (see Contact Us) or use the online Highways Problems Reporting Form (see 'Related Links').
Note: The legislation governing the provision of vehicle access crossing is Section 184 of the Highways Act 1980.
