Parking Restrictions - what they are and how to request them

Pavement parking is not allowed because illegally parked vehicles cause damage to pavements and grass verges. It can also cause serious problems for blind, disabled and elderly people.

Parking and loading restrictions play an important role in traffic management for reasons of road safety, reducing traffic congestion or improving the environment.

-------------------------------

Yellow Lines

The restrictions are shown by yellow lines on the edge of the carriageway and via sign plates.

Two types of yellow lines are used:

  • Double lines usually to mark lengths of road where there is no waiting at any time. However there are exceptions to this and supplementary plates fixed to lighting columns or posts will tell you what the actual restriction is.
  • Single lines usually indicate a shorter period of restriction such as daytime. Again supplementary plates will show the actual times.

Loading restrictions are shown by yellow markings on the kerb and on the supplementary plates.

A consultation and legal procedure is followed which typically takes 6-9 months.  Any objections are considered by the Highways and Planning Committee.

On street parking orders are also investigated such as:-

    • to request 'keep clear' markings near your house please complete the Request for Markings Form (under 'Related Downloads').
    • to request residents parking or waiting restrictions (yellow lines) please fill in the Traffic Request Form  (under 'Related Downloads') providing the reasons and as much information as possible.
  • Disabled parking box markings.
    • to request a disabled parking bay please fill in the Disabled Parking Bay Form (under 'Related Downloads').

All these forms should be returned to the address on the top of the form. You will receive a reply giving the name of the person dealing with the enquiry within ten days.
