Waste Development Plan Document Early Engagement: November/December 2007

Please note this stage has been completed.

The Council has started preparing the Waste Development Plan Document which forms part of Wakefield’s Local Development Framework (LDF). The purpose of the document is to set out how we will manage waste from industrial and business sources as well as from our homes. It will include site proposals and policies to guide decisions about the location and operation of new waste-related developments.

The amount of waste we produce in the district has increased steadily in the past few years, and is expected to grow by as much as 15% by 2021. We need to find ways of managing and disposing of waste in a more sustainable and cost effective way in order to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill.

In 2003, the Council prepared its Municipal Waste Management Strategy to make sure that we could achieve the targets set by the Government for reducing and recycling waste from houses and avoid the risk of large fines. The waste document will take the strategy into account and will also make provision for waste from other sources.

Like other documents being produced as part of the LDF, the waste document will need to be line with the objectives and policies of the Core Strategy, which sets out the planning strategy for sustainable waste management within the district. The main objective is to move waste up the waste management hierarchy from landfill to reuse, recycling and recovery in line with Government guidance and targets for Yorkshire and the Humber set out in the Regional Spatial Strategy.

How you can get involved

There are a number of stages involved in preparing this document. We are at the beginning of this process and we are gathering information to identify the main issues and options for where and how our waste should be managed. The first stage of the process is known as ‘Early Engagement’.

We really want to hear what you think the key issues are. We will use the information and comments we receive at this stage to draft an issues and options document, which will set out all the possible choices that are available to manage waste in the future.

We have prepared a briefing paper and questionnaire about the waste document. It outlines the waste challenges facing Wakefield, the role of the document and the key stages of the process, as well as explaining how you can get involved. You can view or download the briefing paper and questionnaire in ‘Downloads’.

You are also encouraged to complete the questionnaire online by selecting ‘LDF Online Consultation’ in ‘Related Links’.

Alternatively, you can contact us by clicking on the link in 'Also In'.

Further details about the timetable for preparing the Waste Development Plan Document and other LDF documents can be found in the Council’s Local Development Scheme (see ‘Related Links’).
