The vision for the city recognised that the new developments will only fully integrate into the city centre through improvements to the city's pedestrianised areas.
In the last three years the following areas have been improved:
Bull Ring and the Springs
- Phase 1 of work covered the Bull Ring, The Springs North and Teall Street.
- Phase 2 covered Brook Street, Westmorland Street and The Springs South.
Phase 1
Work completed included the creation of:
- a central water feature
- wider pavements
- improved seating
- a range of new lighting features.
Phase 2
Work to extend the Bull Ring, down Westmorland Street to the junction with Teall Street is now complete. Completion of work has seen the reduction of cars throughout the area with pedestrian priority crossing points introduced, helping to create a safer, more attractive, city centre environment.
This project received support from Yorkshire Forward, the region's Development Agency.
Work is currently to improve the city centre and focussing on integrating the new Trinity Walk Development into the existing streetscene. Works commenced on Teall Street, Market Way, Brook Street in spring 2011 and will continue onto the Springs. This work will continue until Spring 2012.
County Hall Square
Proposed improvements to County Hall Square are programmed for Autumn 2011.
