Ings Road/ Kirkgate Junction Improvement (Halford Gyratory)

This junction improvement scheme - the Halford Gyratory - started in September 2006 and was finished in April 2007. For detailed drawings of this scheme see 'Downloads' for the following plans:-

  • Ings Road/Kirkgate Junction Improvement - Construction Details Plan
  • Ings Road/Kirkgate Junction Improvement - Road Markings Plan

The works result in a new road layout and traffic management system that will improve traffic flow and safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

The biggest change will be for traffic heading towards Chantry Bridge from Ings Road. This traffic will use the right hand lane on Ings Road and pass under the railway bridge next to Glyn Webb. City bound traffic will continue to pass the front of Halfords and be directed left up Kirkgate.

The new layout means that traffic from Thornes Lane will not be able to turn right on to Chantry Bridge. This traffic will be directed along Kirkgate to go around the Chantry House Roundabout.

Improved highway safety and the encouragement of more sustainable travel – both priorities for the city – are features that have been built into the scheme, including new and improved pedestrian crossings and cycle lanes.
