Carlton Square has now been enhanced to provide a new modern public space in the heart of Castleford Town Centre.
This new look has been designed by Hudson Architects, with granite paving, new street furniture, as well as a small number of trees. The square will be able to accommodate visiting markets and exciting public events such as those organised by Castleford Heritage Trust as part of Heritage Week.
Since the completion of the project a bollard system has been put in place to prevent vehicular access onto Carlton Street between the hours of 10am and 4pm and 6pm and 6.30am.
It is the intention to complete the refurbishment with a piece of artwork funded jointly by Wakefield Council and the Arts Council. A working group has been set up that includes representatives from the Arts Council, Castleford Town Leader Partnership and Wakefield Council. The tender process will take place over the summer with an anticipated completion of Spring 2009.
An extension to the pedestrianisation of the western end of Carlton street will be considered as part of the bus rail interchange.
