What is a Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI)?
The THI is a grant-giving programme supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). The THI grant funds can be spent on works which will have a positive impact upon the conservation and regeneration of the Market Place by encouraging property owners and tenants to carry out works to restore the historic properties and public spaces, such works can include:
- Structural and external repairs
- Authentic restoration of architectural features
- Repairs and restoration of the public realm
In addition to this the THI will encourage activities to widen knowledge, understanding and awareness of the heritage of Pontefract’s Market Place Conservation Area through consultation, training and providing information on the progress of the THI.

Securing THI Funding
Wakefield Council successfully applied to the HLF for THI funding. The application involved a two-stage bidding process. The Stage I bid where the Council received a development grant to undertake a Stage II bid application, which was successfully approved by the HLF in December 2010.
The Council now plans to work with building owners and tenants to develop plans that address the problems of disrepair to buildings located in the Market Place Conservation Area and promote greater public awareness of the significance of the town's buildings and heritage.
To confirm the town's special character the Council has formally adopted the draft of the Pontefract Market Place Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan documents (see 'Related Links').
