Making an Application

This section of the website is designed to help you understand the processes involved in making an application for Planning Permission.

Electronic Submissions

We welcome and encourage the use of electronic planning applications and online payments via the Planning Portal.

We would like to encourage our customers to make use of electronic files for drawings and applications, and supporting documentation whenever possible.

  • Please refer to our Electronic Files Guide and RIBA Naming Standards both in 'Downloads'

Design and Access Statements

If you are uncertain, please ask us for information about whether or not you will need to submit a Design and Access Statement and what it must contain.

  • The DCLG's Circular on changes to the Development Control System, which is a government note containing information about Design & Access Statements (link to external site)
  • The CABE Guide on Design and Access Statements, this is a How To guide that goes along with the above DCLG document (link to external site)

Other Considerations

Before you can start your development, you should also think about other requirements you might need to fulfil, these include Building Regulations. A complete list is available on the Planning Portal site.

    On our partner site, you can make Online Applications including Electronic Payment, you can  submit your plans and documents electronically. You will also find a wealth of plain English guidance to the planning process.

Application Forms
Here you will find downloadable application forms, these can be printed and completed by hand and then returned to us. Alternatively, we can post you a copy of the relevant forms, or you can pick one up from our Newton Bar reception
Planning Application Fees
Here you will find a guide to the fees that are required; these are set by central government. There is also an interactive fees calculator on the Planning Portal site.
