Pontefract Conservation Areas Review

Pontefract currently contains 3 conservation areas:

  • Market Place
  • Castle
  • The Mount

As part of the DTZ Masterplan for Pontefract Town Centre, the Market Place and Castle conservation areas were reviewed, and surrounding areas were assessed for potential designation as new conservation areas.

Draft conservation area appraisals and management guidelines have been produced for Castle and the proposed new Friarwood and Button Park conservation area, and a draft appraisal and management plan have been produced for Market Place conservation area.

  • Pontefract Conservation Area Proposals Map is available in 'Downloads'

Conservation area appraisal

A conservation area appraisal seeks to define the special interest of a conservation area.  The more clearly the special interest that justifies designation is defined and recorded, the sounder will be the basis for local plan policies, development control decisions and proposals for improvement.

Management guidelines and plans seek to provide guidance and direction on how a conservation area can be managed. A management plan is required for Market Place, as this will form the basis of a Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund (see 'Related Links').
