Safety at sports grounds

The public now expect safety at sports grounds to be of the highest standard.

Building Control provides an inspection service for all sports grounds where the public are likely to gather for a sports event. This is done in conjunction with the Police, Fire and Ambulance Services.

All sports ground owners and event organisers are advised to notify Building Control of their grounds, the sport, the ground capacity and the average attendance. We will then inspect and advise.

Large complex buildings used for major sporting events and with a capacity of 10,000 or more spectators, require a Safety Certificate under the Safety of Sports Ground Act 1975.

Apply for Safety Certificates

Apply online via the UK Welcomes website:

Smaller sports grounds, with covered stands and a capacity of 500 or more spectators, require a Safety Certificate under the Fire Safety and Safety of Places of Sports Act 1987.
