Building Control

Building Control is the process by which building work is checked to make sure that it is designed and built to legal standards. The government sets the standards and Building Control Officers carry out the checks. The standards (called Building Regulations) are designed to ensure the health and safety of everyone working or living in and around the buildings.

Building Control gives a safeguard for everyone:-

  • Home improvers have the assurance that where work comes under the scope of the Building Regulations, it is designed and built properly, to be free from future problems.
  • House buyers have confidence because the council has approved the building plans and site work has been regularly and thoroughly inspected at every stage by trained council staff, who act independently of any commercial interest.

Almost all new building work must meet the safety standards in the Building Regulations.

Council Building Control Officers are:-

  • highly trained in all aspects of building
  • professional
  • impartial
  • publicly accountable

Building Control Officers work closely with other local authority services such as Planning, Environmental Health, Highways and Drainage and can provide a fast and comprehensive service to the public.
