App launched for Year of Walking

This year marks Wakefield's Year of Walking and residents can join in the challenge by downloading the free Aspire Health app now.

The Year of Walking challenge is designed to motivate participants to become healthier and more active by simply walking more often in their day-to-day life.

Walking is an easy and affordable way to exercise, however, many people do not even walk for 10 minutes a day. The app is to encourage people to make walking part of everyday life.

Participants can sign up to the '500 miles challenge' and track their steps against others on the leader board.

There'll be monthly prizes, a calendar of events, hints and tips and new challenges and events will also be added throughout the year.

Increasing steps can be anything from walking to school or work, walking to the shops instead of using the car, or simply getting out and about to enjoy the fantastic parks and countryside our district has to offer.

Cllr Jacquie Speight, Wakefield Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: "The Aspire Health app is a fantastic way to motivate people into taking more steps. It is a simple and easy tool to track your progress and to find out about events taking place all over our district.

"The Year of Walking challenge is in full swing and what better way to exercise than to do so by enjoying some of the fantastic routes Wakefield has to offer."
