Canvassers to visit residents

Wakefield Council is reminding residents that they need to update their household information, to ensure that their details are accurate on the latest electoral register when it is published on 1 December.

From now until 29 October, canvassers from the Council will be visiting the 65,000 households in the district who have not yet responded to requests for information to register to vote.

Canvassers will be visiting households on evenings and weekends and will be asking residents to complete their form on the door step. If no one is available at the time of the visit, the canvasser will leave a reminder form.

Merran McRae

Merran McRae, Wakefield Council’s Electoral Registration Officer, said: “Please keep a look out for our canvassers if you haven’t yet responded to our requests for information to register to vote.

“To avoid a visit from a canvasser, you can still respond to the requests received in the post by updating the information online or over the phone.

“It is important to fill it in, as well as it being a legal requirement, if you are not on the new register when it’s published in December, you might also be refused a loan, mobile phone contract or turned down for a bank account as credit reference companies rely on the register for background information.

“So please co-operate with our canvassers, fill in your registration form or contact our elections team for advice.”

With local elections taking place in the district next May, this is an important opportunity for residents to make sure that they are able to vote.

Residents can opt to have their details excluded from the ‘Open Register’, meaning that the information cannot be used for direct marketing.

Householders who have not received a letter, or any person who requires support, can call the Council’s electoral services team on 01924 305023 or email
