World Cup fever hits Wakefield
World Cup fever has
hit Wakefield, with the Council showing its support to the national team by
flying the England Flag on its public buildings.
The England team has secured their place in the final four with a 2-0 win over
Sweden on Saturday, sending England into the World Cup semi-finals for the
first time in 28 years!
The Council is getting behind the team by flying the England Flag at its public
buildings – at Wakefield Town Hall, County Hall, Ossett Town Hall, Castleford
Civic Centre and Pontefract Town Hall – until the England team comes home.
The clock tower at Wakefield Town Hall will also be lit up in the team’s
colours – white and red – in celebration of the team’s success.
Cllr Peter Box CBE,
Leader of Wakefield Council, said: “As the nation gears up for the biggest
national match in years, we will be showing our support to England in their bid
to win the World Cup. We’ll be flying the England Flag until the team returns
home from Russia and lighting up the clock tower, red and white, at Wakefield
“Tournaments like this have a real way of bringing everyone together and you
can already feel the buzz and anticipation for the next big match.
“I’m sure the whole district will get behind the team and cheer them on in Wednesday’s
semi-final. This Council wishes them every success.”
