23/04/2018, PR8787

Wakefield Council is getting ready to welcome the Tour de Yorkshire back to the district next week.

TDY Pontefract

On the second day, on Friday 4 May, both the women's and men's races will pass through South Elmsall, Ackworth, Pontefract, Airedale and Castleford.

This is part of the second stage of the race which starts that day in Barnsley and ends in Ilkley, and is the third year the race has come to the district.

The women's race will enter South Elmsall at around 10.15am and leave Castleford at around 10.50am. The men's race will enter South Elmsall at around 4pm and leave Castleford at around 4.35pm.

Events are taking place on the day where people can get together to enjoy the atmosphere. This includes a speciality themed market at Pontefract, activities and entertainment in the town centre. Castleford market, the town's library and South Elmsall market and library are also hosting activities throughout the day.

Rolling road closures will take place during the race, which will last around 30 to 50 minutes. The times are an estimate and spectators will need to allow plenty of time to get to their preferred place to view the races.

Additionally, Highways England are closing the exit slip roads of the M62 at Junction 32 from 9am to 11am and 3pm to 5pm as the women's and men's races pass through Pontefract and Castleford. Diversions will be in place.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to plan their day in advance to avoid being affected by the rolling road closures and the closure of the Junction 32 exit slip roads.

Cllr Peter Box CBE, Leader of Wakefield Council, said: "We're on the countdown to welcoming back this fantastic sporting event to our district. It is an excellent platform to showcase what we have and to bring visitors into the area.

"I hope that once again hundreds of spectators will line the route and the Tour will be just as successful as in previous years and it will give another huge boost to our district."

The Tour de Yorkshire race is organised by Welcome to Yorkshire and the Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), in association with British Cycling.

As well as visiting the Wakefield district, the 2018 cyclists will race from Beverley to Doncaster on Thursday 3 May, from Richmond to Scarborough on Saturday 5 May, and from Halifax to Leeds on Sunday 6 May. The event features both men and women's races.

The first Tour de Yorkshire took place in 2015. It forms part of the legacy of the historic Yorkshire Grand Depart of the Tour de France in 2014.
