Wakefield Council is helping to make sure that everyone has a voice in the upcoming local elections in May, by writing to all households in the district where no one is registered to vote.

On Thursday 3 May, a third of Wakefield Council seats – 21 in total – are up for election.

The Council has posted letters to all addresses in the district where no one is registered to vote, to remind people of the upcoming elections and how they can register and have their say on 3 May. Anyone who has received a letter is urged to respond as soon as possible.

Merran McRae, Wakefield Council’s Electoral Registration Officer, said: “Only people who are registered can take part in May’s local elections. Registering is quick and easy, so do it now to make sure you don’t miss out on having your say on polling day.

“It is really important that everyone eligible is registered to vote because banks, building societies and loan companies use the register to verify the address of applicants. So as well as not being able to vote, you may also have difficulty opening a bank account or getting a loan.”

Residents can register online at
www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. They will need their date of birth and national insurance number to be able to register. They can also opt to have their details excluded from the ‘open register’, meaning that the information cannot be used for direct marketing.

Anyone who has moved house recently, or changed other details such as their name, may not be registered correctly so should contact Electoral Services to check by calling 01924 305023 or by emailing
elections@wakefield.gov.uk

Those needing support can also visit a voter registration event on Tuesday 6 February, 10am to 4pm, or Thursday 8 March, 10am to 2.30pm, at Wakefield One, where the electoral services team can offer help and advice.

Those aged 16 and 17 can also register to vote so that they will be eligible to vote in the next election after their 18th birthday.

The final date to register to vote in the May elections is Tuesday 17 April.
