Vandals targeting Hemsworth Cemetery

20/12/2017, PR8720A

A senior Wakefield councillor has condemned vandals for their 'disgraceful and disrespectful' behavior in causing damage at Hemsworth Cemetery.

Tree vandalism at Hemsworth cemetery

Concerns have been raised as a 40-year-old tree had been repeatedly attacked, by having sections of its bark removed.

Wakefield Council is now using mobile CCTV to try and identity the person or people causing the damage to the sugar maple tree, which may have to be removed if it cannot recover.

Cllr Maureen Cummings, Cabinet Member for Environment and Communities at Wakefield Council, said: "It is very distressing to know that some people would target a tree in a cemetery. This behaviour is very odd, utterly disgraceful and disrespectful – and we need anyone with information to help us identify who is doing this so we can take the appropriate action."

Anyone with information should call the Council on 0345 8 506 506.
