Details of Council services over Christmas
Wakefield Council is
focusing on providing essential services for those that need them the most
between Christmas and New Year.
Non-essential services will be closed from 5pm on Friday 22 December and will
reopen on Tuesday 2 January.
Wakefield Council’s Chief Executive, said: “Many of our services are used very
little over the festive period. That is why we have decided to close
non-essential services again this year. By closing these facilities, savings
can be made on things such as heating and lighting costs.”
Essential Council services will continue to be provided between Christmas and
New Year. This includes home care, residential care, children’s social work,
the Council’s Contact Centre and emergency response teams, including gritting.
Mrs McRae added: “It is vitally important that we keep essential services open
for those who need them. We will protect vulnerable people, work to keep roads
open in winter weather and collect household waste.
“As in previous years, we will have staff on standby in the event of any
emergencies or severe weather.”
In addition to normal school closures, most Council buildings will be closed
between Christmas and New Year, including Wakefield One and County Hall.
Wakefield Town Hall will be open for the Registrars service only from Wednesday
27 December to Saturday 30 December. Normal opening hours resume on Tuesday 2
All of the Council’s libraries and museums will close on Saturday 23 December
and reopen as usual from Tuesday 2 January.
Pontefract Castle will be open on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 December, 9.30am –
4.30pm. It will then close until Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 December, 9.30am –
4.30pm. It will be closed on Monday 1 January, will normal opening hours
resuming on Tuesday 2 January. The Sandal Castle site will be open throughout
Christmas and New Year, with the car park open daily from 8.30am – 5.30pm.
All markets will be open on normal market days throughout the Christmas and New
Year period, excluding the bank holidays on 25, 26 and 31 December and 1
January 2018. Opening times will vary, please check the Council’s website.
Additionally, Castleford Market Hall and outdoor market and Pontefract Market
Hall will be open on Sunday 24 December, 8am – 2pm.
Sports and leisure facilities at Normanton, Featherstone, Pontefract and
Thornes Park will be closed from 12noon on Saturday 23 December and reopen on Tuesday
Pugneys car park will be open every day, 9am to 4.30pm. The visitor centre at
Pugneys will be open every day except bank holidays.
Letters and calendars have been distributed to all households with collection
dates for household waste. Household Waste Recycling Centres will be closed on
Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. The centres will operate a normal
service on all other days over the holiday period.
Over the Christmas and New Year period there will be some changes to opening
times for Licensing, Registrars and Bereavement Services. Please check the
