Countdown to Christmas as light switch-ons announced
Lights will be shining across the district this Christmas, as the details for the Christmas light switch-ons and special festive markets are announced.
The Wakefield Christmas lights will be switched on by the Mayor, Cllr Kevin Barker, on Friday 17 November, 5.30 pm in the Cathedral precinct. The fun starts from 4pm with entertainment provided by Ridings FM and local singer Micky Johnson. This year’s switch-on stage is kindly sponsored by Arnold Clark.
Five pupils from The Rookeries Carleton Junior and Infant School have won the Northern Powergrid’s Light up Yorkshire competition. They will see their winning design illuminated as part of the Wakefield Christmas lights switch on, along with a mini disco, before the main event.
The city centre will also be home to a special festive market on Friday 17 November, 10am - 6pm, and Saturday 18 November, 10am - 4pm. The Christmas market will run alongside the regular outdoor market. The market will include a free carousel in the Bullring, live music, street entertainment plus donkey rides on the Saturday.
The Council is also holding special switch-on events in Castleford and Pontefract.
Deputy Council Leader, Cllr Denise Jeffery, will be switching on the Castleford Christmas lights at 5.45pm on Tuesday 28 November. Cllr Jeffery will be joined by Castleford singer and X Factor star, Jack Walton and local community groups.
There will also be a Christmas market throughout the day in Castleford, from 10am to 6pm, with children’s rides, donkey rides and lots of family entertainment. Staged entertainment starts at 4pm where Jack Walton will be entertaining the crowds alongside performances from Lock Lane Community Group and Castleford Tigers Cheerleaders.
The Pontefract Christmas lights will be switched on by local councillors and the Haribo Bear at 6.30pm on Monday 27 November in the town centre. A Christmas market will be running throughout the day, from 10am to 6pm, with a funfair, donkey rides and entertainment for all the family. Staged entertainment from 4pm with vocal performances from Kaci J, Why so serious, Simon Walker, and Stagecoach Performing Arts plus a Christmas Panto snippet from Saint Giles Pantomime Society.
