Residents and visitors are being encouraged to join in the first Wakefield Walking Week (September 4 – 10) and take the opportunity to explore the great outdoors.

The celebratory event encourages people of all ages and abilities to enjoy a stroll or join in a more vigorous walk in the district.

A packed programme of volunteer and instructor-led walks, ranging from short 30-minute walks to longer walks of up to two hours, are taking place right across the district.

Cllr Jacquie Speight, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport at Wakefield Council, said: “Our district is home to some beautiful parks and trails, as well as to some fascinating urban landscapes.

“Wakefield Walking Week is a great opportunity to get out and enjoy our diverse places, so I’d urge everyone to get involved, join in and have fun.”

Walking is good for physical fitness and can also play a valuable part in boosting mental wellbeing. For more information on health walks and walking in your area please see:

People taking part in the walks are reminded to wear appropriate clothing and footwear, either training shoes or walking boots, to be prepared for all weather conditions and to bring some water with them.
