Wakefield Council appoints its new Mayor
Cllr Kevin Barker has been appointed as the Mayor of Wakefield.
Cllr Barker is a councillor for Wakefield Rural ward who worked for 42 years for Leeds City Council's parks department. He is being supported by his daughter-in-law, Kirsty Barker, who takes on the role of Mayoress.
The Mayor has selected the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the Samantha Sykes Foundation Trust as his chosen charities for his year in office.
The Deputy Mayor is Cllr Stuart Heptinstall, who represents the Wakefield East ward and was in the mining industry throughout his working life. He is being supported by his granddaughter, Charlotte Heptinstall, as the Deputy Mayoress.
Cllr Peter Box CBE, Leader of Wakefield Council, congratulated both Cllr Barker and Cllr Heptinstall and wished them well for their term of office.
Cllr Box said: "I am sure they will represent the district with dignity and commitment, and I hope they enjoy their year in office."
