Armed Forces Day celebrations are coming back to Pontefract Park this year.

Wakefield Council is marking the outstanding contribution that the armed forces make to the country with a day of fun and activities on Sunday 18 June, from 10am.

2017’s event will see a special plaque unveiled to commemorate the important role that Pontefract Racecourse, which is in Pontefract Park, played in World War One, when it was used as an airfield. Like so many racecourses, Pontefract was a ready-made airfield and the BE2c aircraft of 33 Squadron and 76 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps used the park as a landing ground from 1916 to 1918.

The celebrations will also include a Dakota flypast, courtesy of the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, and a spectacular parachute freefall display by the Royal Logistic Corps Free Fall Display team.

Cllr Sandra Pickin, Wakefield Council’s Armed Forces Champion, said: “It is great that we are marking Pontefract Park’s role in World War One and it is also a fitting tribute that the park will once again be home to the fantastic celebrations we have planned for our Armed Forces Day.

“Thousands of people came along last year to enjoy the day and show their appreciation for our armed forces - and this year’s event looks set to be even better!”

Local armed forces groups, emergency services, veteran groups and community groups will be holding stalls or demonstrations at the event, alongside a plentiful host of food, drink and craft stalls. Entertainment will be provided by local dance groups and bands.

For younger visitors the event will offer a giant slide, bouncy castle, climbing towers, assault course, face painting and paintballing.

Cllr Pickin added: “Armed Forces Day is a fantastic fun day out for all the family as well as being a great opportunity to bring people together to recognise the contribution of those who have fought to protect our country and those still serving. Put the date in your diary and join us on 18 June!”

Entry to the event and on-site parking is free. For more information visit the Armed Forces Day Facebook page at
