Book gifting scheme at Airedale Library

A new book gifting scheme for babies is being launched at Airedale Library.

The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is coming to the Airedale and Ferry Fryston community and those with babies born after the 1 September 2016 can sign up.

Those registered will be sent one age appropriate book each month, by post, right up until their child’s fifth birthday.

The scheme, provided in partnership with Wakefield Council and Spectrum Community Health CIC, is being officially launched at a community fair on Wednesday 3 May, 9.30am - 12.30pm at Airedale Library.

Eligible families that attend on the day will receive a free Peter Rabbit book and will be entered into a prize draw to win a £25 Mothercare or Early Learning Centre gift card.

Cllr Pat Garbutt

Cllr Pat Garbutt, Cabinet Member for Health, said: “We’re delighted to welcome the Imagination Library to Airedale and Ferry Fryston. Babies love books and it’s never too soon to start reading. Reading with children from a young age builds listening, language and memory skills in a fun way, helping children get ready for school. It is also a great way to entertain and sooth younger children.

“If you have a young child that was born since September last year please sign up and enjoy the benefits of this wonderful scheme.”

Dr Linda Harris, Chief Executive at Spectrum, said: “We are really pleased to be able to support the district with the Imagination Library. It’s great to see a project like this giving babies a fun and educational way to start life.”

Also available at the community fair will be:

• Rhyme time session
• Nursery rhyme treasure trail
• Small world play
• Tooth brushing and film activities
• Information about local services for families.

Parents of eligible children are encouraged to register for the Imagination Library online at, call 01924 311400 or visit Airedale Library. It is currently only available for those living in the Airedale and Ferry Fryston ward.
