New gym facilities at Normanton are being launched at a free open weekend.

On Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 April the Normanton Leisure facility, within the previous Normanton Community Centre, will be offering free taster sessions and group gym inductions.

Cllr Les Shaw, Wakefield Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: "There was a need and a demand for these facilities in this area and the space available at Normanton Community Centre has allowed us to create a completely different type of training experience, which will complement our other facilities.

"The underutilised space has been given a new lease of life, supporting even more people to get physically active. This style of gym will give more creativity and flexibility into exercise programmes due to the type of equipment involved.

"The facilities are also available to non-Aspire members, of all abilities, to give even more people the opportunity to move more often and live well. I encourage as many people are possible to check out what's on offer at the free taster weekend."

The improved health and fitness area now offers an open plan layout with a spin studio and specialised zones covering cardiovascular, functional training and group exercise. New cardiovascular equipment includes treadmills, skillmills, concept rowers and upright bikes. The changing rooms and shower facilities have also been fully refurbished.

Cllr Shaw added: "We apologise to our regular users for the inconvenience caused whilst the works were taking place but hope they will now fully appreciate the new and improved end result, providing a real asset to the health and fitness offer in the area."

The refurbishment, new equipment and shower facilities cost approximately £155k, which has been funded within existing budgets. The new gym facilities are in addition to the swimming provision and fitness classes that the centre already provides. The site will also be hosting additional classes, a new weight management service and an increased 'exercise on referral' programme.

As part of the Normanton Leisure open weekend, members of the public will be able to book on to free classes held throughout the weekend. These include Strong by Zumba, Body combat, Suspension Training, Boxercise, Aerobiking, and Functional circuit.
