The build is on for Minsthorpe’s new leisure centre
Ref: PR 8494
Construction is now underway on Minsthorpe's new multi-million pound leisure centre.
Preparatory work has been advancing since December and now the contractors have begun the construction phase, including building foundations.
Cllr Les Shaw, Wakefield Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: "It is great to see the project progressing and very soon people will able to see the physical building taking shape.
"Every milestone like this takes us that step closer to delivering the modern, high quality leisure facility that local people want and deserve."
The area is now a fully working construction site and parents are being asked to ensure their children keep well away the site.
Cllr Shaw said: "The site is very busy now and although the contractor has it fully secured it is important that people, especially children, do not try to enter the area. We want everyone to stay safe."
The £5million centre, on Ash Grove, will house a range of facilities including a 25 metre, six-lane swimming pool, studio space and a 50 station air-conditioned gym.
The swimming space will offer a wide range of programmed activities, means that the new pool will offer swimming opportunities for people of all ages and abilities, including those who want to learn to swim, as well as those who want to use water space to keep fit and active.
The planned studio space is also extremely versatile and could cater for a full range of activities from toddler soft play and baby gym to martial arts and table tennis.
The leisure centre will offer car parking, cycle storage and a school bus pull in, all conveniently located on site.
It is expected that the new facility will open in Spring 2018.
