Ref: PR 8432
Wakefield Council's Cabinet looks set to agree the events taking place in the district next year.
The Council's key decision makers are being asked to approve the district's Major Events Programme for 2017/18.
If approved, the Council will support the following events in 2017/18:
• Pontefract Liquorice Festival (August)
• Seaside in the City (August)
• Seaside in Castleford (August)
• Castleford Roman Festival (September)
• Christmas lights events in Castleford, Pontefract and Wakefield (November)
• The Festival of Food, Drink and Rhubarb (February 2018)
In the last 12 months, the current programme is estimated to have attracted over £5m of visitor spend into Wakefield's local economy.
Cllr Les Shaw, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: "These highly popular events have brought hundreds of thousands of visitors into our district and millions of pounds into our local economy. They help to put Wakefield on the map as a cultural, tourist destination and a unique place to visit with events such as the world-famous Festival of Food, Drink and Rhubarb and the Pontefract Liquorice Festival.
"As well as providing fantastic activities that celebrate our local heritage to residents, they also boost the number of visitors we have from outside the district. We look forward to planning next year's events to make them the best yet."
The Major Events Programme is being discussed by the Council's Cabinet on Tuesday 20 December. Members of the public are invited to attend the Cabinet on Tour meeting, 10.30am-12noon, at Castleford Civic Centre.
