You Choose! How would you balance the Council’s budget for 2017/18?
Wakefield Council is asking residents and local businesses how they would choose to balance the Council's budget by using an interactive tool on its website.
The Council is expecting to make savings of £24 million in the next financial year, on top of the £146 million savings that have been made since 2011. This is a total saving of £170 million at the end of the next financial year (2017/18).
'YouChoose' is an interactive budget calculator on the Council's website which highlights the difficult choices that need to be made when making savings to budgets.
The Council is urging residents and businesses to use the online tool to indicate how they think the budget would best be spent. The results will then be fed back to decision-makers, who ultimately have to make tough choices on where to make savings.
Cllr Peter Box, Leader of Wakefield Council, said: "The scale of the cuts to our budget are set to continue at a similar rate to the past few years. At a time when demand for our adult and children's social care services continues to rise, finding ways to continue to make saving is a huge challenge for us.
"Our residents all have different priorities and needs of the Council, and we need to balance this against managing the reduction in our Government funding. We have already made significant savings in recent years so we know there are no easy options left.
"We have always tried to limit the impact these cuts will have on our residents, and of course we will continue to do so, but the reality is that most people will be affected and will notice a difference.
"These are tough decisions to make which is why I want residents and businesses to tell us what they think, so that we can take their opinions into consideration.
"The 'YouChoose' exercise is a way to capture these views and leaves participants with some idea of just how tough these choices are to make. I encourage as many people as possible to take part to have their say on what services are most important to them."
The budget calculator is available from November 3 – December 18. For more information, or to take part, in the YouChoose exercise visit www.wakefield.gov.uk/budget
