Crowds come out for Seaside in Wakefield
Huge crowds descended on Wakefield when the Council brought the seaside to the city.
An estimated 48,000 people packed into the city centre over the weekend which had been transformed into a seaside haven with a beach, donkeys, bumper boats, films and a carousel.
Cllr Les Shaw, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport said: “I’m delighted that so many people had a great time at our seaside and enjoyed themselves. It was a great event with lots of activities for families to enjoy.
“I also hope to see lots of people at Seaside in Castleford on Saturday. I’m sure it will also be a fantastic day, and I’d encourage people to come and enjoy the fun.”
Over the weekend in Wakefield’s Cathedral Precinct youngster were able to enjoy a whole range of activities including Punch and Judy shows, face painting and balloon modelling and free workshops, plus a variety of market and food stalls.
The street entertainment included stilt walking lobsters and walkabout pirates. A TV screen featured the films Toy Story, Happy Feet and Madagascar.
The seaside comes to Castleford on Saturday August 20, 10am-4pm, in the heart of Castleford town centre. It’s a time for people to get their bucket and spades ready to enjoy the beach and lots of other free attractions including Punch and Judy and donkey rides.
