Have your say on proposals for a new leisure facility in Minsthorpe
Ref: PR 8303
Proposals for a new £5m leisure centre on the site of the former Minsthorpe swimming pool have been revealed for people to feedback their views.
A public consultation is being launched to find out what people think of the proposal for a new sports centre. The facility would house a 25 metre, six-lane swimming pool, alongside a 50-station gym and fitness suite, which could accommodate classes for up to 40 people. It would also include a pool-side seating area and viewing area.
The Council is currently working with consultants and architects to develop the plans. Images of the proposed layout of the centre are available and it is expected that artists' impressions of the development will be released in the coming weeks.
Cllr Les Shaw, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport at Wakefield Council, said: "This is a very important and exciting project for the people of the south east. We want to ensure that we get it right for residents and are asking them to look at the proposals and share their views with us. I would like to encourage as many people as possible to have their say, either by completing an online questionnaire, or coming to a community event."
The consultation, which runs from 30 July until 20 August, gives people the chance to look at the proposals and comment on them.
After the consultation a full planning application will be submitted in the autumn. If this is approved construction work would be expected to begin in the new year. It is anticipated the building would open in spring 2018.
People can take part in the consultation, online at www.wakefield.gov.uk/minsthorpe or at the community events where Wakefield Council staff will be available to discuss the proposals. The events are being held at
South Elmsall Market on 9 August from 10am until 2pm
