Ref: PR 8283

Children in the Wakefield district are being encouraged to join the Big Friendly Read, Summer Reading Challenge.

They can borrow six books from Wakefield Council's libraries to read during the school holidays and if they complete the challenge they will receive a medal and certificate.

The annual event is for children over the age of four and they can borrow any type of book such as novels, factual books, joke books, picture books or audio books.

Cllr Les Shaw, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport at Wakefield Council, said: "Children love a challenge and we want reading to become a life-long habit. It also helps to increase children's reading confidence as well as being fun."

Libraries across the country will be celebrating the work of Roald Dahl, who was born 100 years ago. The theme for this year is the Big Friendly Read, which will feature some of Roald Dahl's best-loved characters and the artwork of his principal illustrator, Sir Quentin Blake.

There will be lots of activities taking place in libraries too and for details see www.wakefield.gov.uk/libraries
