Crowds gathered today (Friday) at Wakefield’s war memorial beside County Hall to pay tribute to Jo Cox, MP for Batley and Spen.

People came together to share a minute’s silence to reflect on the tragic events in which Mrs Cox lost her life and to express their sympathy and support for her family.

Cllr Peter Box CBE, leader of Wakefield Council has alsopaid tribute to the popular MP and said: “It is with extreme sadness that I extend our thoughts and sympathies to Jo’s family and friends at this terrible time of loss.

“This appalling act of violence has robbed a family of a much loved mother and wife, and a community of their greatest champion. She was fiercely proud of representing the people of Batley and Spen and had dedicated her life to fighting injustice in the world.

“As we come to terms with what has happened, it is essential that we continue to live by the core values and principles, for which Jo was such a passionate advocate, which enable us to live in a fair and open society.”
