Celebrate Armed Forces Day at Pontefract Park

PR ref: 8235

Date: 23/05/2016

There's just a month to go until this year's Armed Forces Day celebrations at Pontefract Park.

Wakefield Council is marking the outstanding contribution that the armed forces make to the country with a day of activities on Saturday 25 June.

This is the first year that Armed Forces Day will be held at Pontefract Park. Over 400 trees were planted there in March in memory of fallen soldiers from the local area during the Great War.

Just a few of the many highlights of the day include a Lancaster Bomber flypast, Parachute freefall display courtesy of Ravens Free Fall Team, a display by West Yorkshire Police dogs and a search demonstration from the Police Helicopter.

There's also plenty for the children to enjoy including a giant slide, bouncy castle, climbing towers, bungee trampoline, face painting and paint balling.

Cllr Sandra Pickin, Armed Forces Champion for the district, said: "Come along to Pontefract Park to enjoy what is sure to be a fantastic day out for all the family. With so many attractions taking place throughout the day there really is something for everyone.

"Armed Forces Day is a great way to bring people together to recognise the contribution of those who have fought to protect our county and those still serving."

Visitors will also be able to meet the animals from Owl Adventures, Yorkshire's exciting falconry based mobile zoo. They will also be holding a Falconry Flying display in the main arena.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, St Johns Ambulance, Sea Cadets, Army Cadets, Air Training Corps, Scouts, and many more will also feature throughout the day.

There will also be plenty of food and drink options including Farmer Copley's Hog Roast, Curry from Dee Spice, Dukes Pizza and craft beers from Bosuns Brewery, Horbury and Hamelsworde Brewery, Hemsworth.

Winners of the Armed Forces Day children's competition will also have their prizes awarded at the event by Lord St Oswald and army veteran Ben Parkinson MBE.

Entry and parking is free.
