Wakefield Council to review options for siting of new swimming pool for South East
Ref: PR 6134
Wakefield Council is to re-visit all options for the site of its new swimming pool for the South East of the district.
Unfortunately the site at Minsthorpe Community College, which was identified for the new £5m pool, has proved to be unsuitable and following detailed discussions between the Council and academy it has now been concluded that this is not a viable option.
Cllr Les Shaw, Wakefield Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: "This is a setback but does not affect our commitment to deliver a new, high quality swimming pool for the South East.
"It is unfortunate that we cannot deliver our plans on the Minsthorpe College site but we have to accept it and move on as quickly as possible.
"We are now looking at other options, including the site of the old swimming pool, where demolition is now underway.
"A report will go to Cabinet as soon as possible so we can move forward with a new preferred site."
Cllr Shaw said the Council had worked hard with the Community College but the lay-out of the site and the overall costs of building a new pool on the site had combined to make the plans unworkable.
Contractors started demolishing the old pool – which was too expensive to repair - in late October and expect to be finished by Christmas.
Cllr Shaw said: "The new swimming pool is an important project and it is essential that we get it right to ensure we provide the right facility for the local community."
