Wakefield Council is offering some free parking to make it easier and more affordable for residents to do their Christmas shopping in the district.

The Council is offering free parking in Council parking areas in Wakefield, Pontefract and Castleford, on Thursdays from 3pm from 26 November until Christmas.

Cllr David Dagger, Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways, said: "We want to encourage more people to do their Christmas shopping locally. I am pleased we are able to offer free parking in Wakefield, Pontefract and Castleford from 3pm on five consecutive Thursdays in the run-up to Christmas. We hope that this will give a boost to our local retailers and benefit residents and visitors into the district."

The Council's on-street parking spaces and its own car parks in Wakefield, Pontefract and Castleford, will be free from 3pm Thursday 26 November, and continuing on December 3, December 10, December 17 and December 24.

Signs will be displayed on or next to parking payment machines to publicise the dates for free parking.

Please note that the free parking offer does not include privately-run car parks or Merchant Gate multi-storey car park.
