Wakefield Council is backing National Adoption Week

PR ref: 5086

Date: 19/10/2015

Wakefield Council is backing National Adoption Week, (October 19 – 25) which this year is focused on encouraging people to come forward to give a child or a sibling group a loving and permanent home.

A total of 47 children were matched with adoptive families via Wakefield Council's adoption service in the last year (April 2014 – April 2015).

The focus of this year's National Adoption Week is seeking adopters for children over the age of four and sibling groups.

Cllr Olivia Rowley, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: "Adoption is hugely rewarding and it is a fantastic way to create a family.

"For many potential adopters their first preference is to adopt a baby. However, the reality is that locally, regionally and nationally very few babies are now placed for adoption.  So we want to raise awareness of the children in the district who need new families and encourage people to come and talk to the team.

"I would urge anyone who has been thinking about adoption to get in touch and find out more."

Adoptive families in the district can get post-adoption support and advice throughout their child's childhood.

Adopters don't need to be married, in a relationship, or in paid employment. They do need to be able to provide a loving and secure home.

The Council holds monthly drop-in-sessions which are held every third Thursday of the month between 4.30pm and 6.30pm at Wakefield Council Office, Caldervale Road, Wakefield, WF1 5PH.
