Parkrun in Wakefield celebrates its first birthday this weekend.

Wakefield Council supports parkrun events across the district. Parkrun are free, weekly 5km timed runs that are open to everyone, free and are safe and easy to take part in.

Thornes Park hosts a parkrun event every Saturday at 9am and this Saturday (26 September) marks its first anniversary. To celebrate there is a black tie and evening dress theme (optional) and there will be birthday cake for the runners at the finish line.

To mark the occasion Wakefield Council is also reminding residents how they can take part.

Cllr Les Shaw, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: "Parkruns are a great way to meet new people, get some exercise and enjoy our amazing parks. It's for anyone of any age, you can be club affiliated or a casual runner. You can even take part with your children, a buggy and your dog. I encourage everyone to pop along to their local parkrun this Saturday to see what it's all about."

On average the parkrun attracts 150 residents a week and there is plenty of room for more to join in the fun. Just one of many local residents who regularly enjoy the park run at Thornes Park is Richard Lee.

Richard said: "Just under a year ago I publicly set myself the challenge of completing a 10k race in under an hour. When I woke the next day I realised that my previous best was 75 minutes, I only ran when there was the possibility of sausage sandwiches and I hated going to a gym. Fortunately I wandered down to my local parkrun and discovered an encouraging, friendly and amazing group that didn't care if I was slow as long as I jogged round with a smile.

"After nine months of their help and support I completed the Leeds 10k in 57:54. Huge thanks to Andy, Lisa and all the volunteers who make our Saturday mornings possible."

Parkruns take place every Saturday in the district at Thornes Park Wakefield, Nostell Priory and Pontefract Racecourse.
