Pontefract hosts picnic and proms
An exciting programme of music has been unveiled for Pontefract Castle's Proms in the Castle event.
The West Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra will perform a variety of popular classics and film scores, including the Star Wars theme, at the event on Saturday 11 July. Doors open at 6.30pm and the concert starts at 7.30pm. Bring your own food, drink, low-backed seating and blankets to make the most of this event.
During the day, on Saturday, there is also a family-friendly picnic at the castle from 11am - 4pm. The free event is an opportunity to bring a picnic and enjoy activities, including a birds of prey display by Kira Weston of KL Falconry, a performance of pop classics from Pontefract band Cinnabar, a bouncy castle, community stalls, and dance displays.
The proms event has been organised by Wakefield Council. And the picnic event is a joint event organised by the Council and Pontefract Heritage Group.
Cllr Les Shaw, Cabinet Member for Culture and Sport at Wakefield Council, said: "This is a great weekend for Pontefract and the proms programme looks really entertaining, so I'd encourage people to get their tickets and come along.
"The picnic is also a great opportunity for families to get together, relax and have fun in a beautiful setting. Last year more than 4,000 people came to the picnic – it has quickly become one of the highlights of the Pontefract season".
Martin Lodge, Vice Chair Pontefract Heritage Group, said: "Pontefract Heritage Group is committed to delivering events that promote the heritage of our town; this event gives us an opportunity to work with the Council to promote the town and district's jewel in the heritage crown."
Already 1,000 tickets for the proms have been sold. Advanced tickets are £6 adults, £4 children. On the gate: £8 adults, £6 children.
Tickets are being sold at Pontefract Castle, Pontefract Library, Wakefield Visitor Centre and online at www.wakefield.gov.uk/castleevents
