Summer activities and events taking place in Wakefield
Date: 15 June 2015
A programme of summer events has been launched in the Wakefield district – with a wide range of fun-filled activities for both children and adults.
A summer leaflet containing details on what’s on between June and August is being sent out to schools and libraries to give residents the information they need to plan ahead and avoid missing out on the fun.
Family friendly events including the ever popular Seaside in Wakefield – which brings the beach to the city centre (August 15 and 16), has for the first time been extended to include Seaside in Castleford Town Centre (August 22), and the world-famous Pontefract Liquorice Festival (July 12) which celebrates the tasty treat.
Other events include the dragon boat festival at Pugneys Country Park, (July 11) and Picnic and Proms at Pontefact Castle (July 11).
Armed Forces Day is being celebrated in the Wakefield district at Nostell Priory (June 20), Love Parks Week (July 24 – August 2) and Magna Carta in the Castle takes place at Pontefract Castle (June 20).
Cllr Les Shaw, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport at Wakefield Council, said: “I am very proud there are so many different activities taking place in the district this summer.
“These events really do show-case some of the best assets of our area, and it’s a great opportunity for residents to go and explore our historic places, towns, city centres and country parks.”
