Summer season opens at Sandal Castle

The summer season opens at Sandal Castle this weekend with a character storytelling session on the Great Fire of London.

The event has been organised by the Friends of Sandal Castle and features local professional storyteller Paul Mackintosh in character as Sir William Petty, who has just lost his London home in the fire.

The free event, on Sunday 7 June from 1-3pm, marks the start of the summer season at the castle when the visitor centre will re-open every weekend from this Saturday until the end of August.

Cllr Les Shaw, Wakefield Council’s Portfolio holder for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: “We are grateful to the Friends for putting on this event to mark the start of the summer season at Sandal Castle. We hope the public will come along and support the event and make good use of the visitor centre which will be open at weekends from noon until 4pm and during the special events that we have planned for the site.”

Other events at Sandal include Henry IV (Parts I and II) on June 26, a concert by the West Yorkshire Police Band on July 19, Love’s Labour’s Lost on August 28 and Heritage Open Days on September 12 and 13.  More information is available from www.wakefield.gov.uk/castleevents.
