Wakefield Council launches Civil Funerals and Remembrance Ceremonies

PR 4960
2 June 2015

Wakefield Council is launching a new service offering Civil Funerals and Remembrance Ceremonies - the only service of this kind currently offered by a West Yorkshire council.

The service will start on 15 June and is being introduced in the Wakefield district in response to a growing interest in this kind of funeral and it will be managed by Wakefield Registration and Celebratory Services.

Civil Funerals are for people who do not wish to have a religious ceremony, although a favourite hymn or reading may be included. A Civil Funeral will offer a unique and sensitive ceremony that is focused on the wishes, beliefs and values of the deceased and their family.

Civil Funerals can take place in a variety of different venues including crematoria and non-religious burial grounds.

The Council has appointed two new Civil Funeral Celebrants who will meet with family members to create and deliver a life focused, bespoke funeral ceremony.

Cllr Graham Stokes, Cabinet Member for Corporate Services at Wakefield Council said: “By setting up this new service we are aiming to give residents a wider choice of the type of funeral they would like for themselves or for a loved one.”

The Council is also offering Remembrance Ceremonies which can take place at any public, non- religious venue in the Wakefield district.

A Remembrance Ceremony is a unique and personal way to celebrate the life of a loved one.

It can be held to commemorate the anniversary of a death or other special date. It can also be held after or instead of a funeral ceremony and may be particularly suitable for occasions when a death has occurred overseas or where not everyone was able to attend a funeral.

Although this is a non-religious ceremony it will be still be possible to include a favourite hymn or reading.

This range of new services will also include a Ceremony to accompany the interment or strewing of ashes which would also be led by a Civil Funeral Celebrant.
